Early Wednesday morning, the Presidential Amnesty Office, Abuja was burnt causing substantial damage to official documents and property.
The inferno which started at about 1.30 a.m. was suspected to have resulted from a surge in electricity.
The fire in the building which houses the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, started in one of the offices in the top floor.
It took men of the Federal Fire Service and the Fire Service of the Federal Capital Territory about four and a half hours to put out the fire.
A press statement signed by Mr. Henry Ugholue, head, Media and Publicity of the office quoted the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and the Chief Executive Officer of the Amnesty Programme, Honourable Kingsley Kuku, as assuring all stakeholders and the general public that the incident will not adversely affect service delivery at the office as all sensitive operational documents regarding the Amnesty Programme have been confirmed to be intact.
Kuku, according to the statement further assured that in a matter of days, the physical structures of the burnt offices would be restored."
"COURT ASKED TO STOP APRIL PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
The Peoples Mandate Party (PMP) and its presidential candidate during the 2007 presidential election, Dr. Arthur Nwankwo, on Wednesday, asked the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, sitting as the Presidential Election Tribunal to stop the forthcoming presidential elections.
The presidential candidate of PMP had, through his counsel, Nnabuike Edechime, gone to the Court of Appeal seeking to annul the election of Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan, alleging that the process that brought them to power contravened the electoral laws.
He claimed that there were electoral inconsistencies and irregularities in the said polls and concluded that the best thing for the court to do was to pronounce the election a nullity.
In an application filed by the party on January 18, 2011, Nwankwo and PMP asked the court for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining INEC from conducting any fresh presidential election in Nigeria on April 2011 or any other date.
They further sought an order of interlocutory injunction restraining Jonathan from presenting himself or allowing himself to be presented to INEC as a candidate in any presidential election to be held in Nigeria on any date pending the determination of the petition."
