PageRank basics(from Wikipedia)
« Reply #3 on: February 05, 2011, 03:11:40 PM »
Now, let us see the basics about PageRank, copied from Wikipedia:

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page and used by the Google Internet search engine, that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is referred to as the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

The name "PageRank" is a trademark of Google, and the PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999). However, the patent is assigned to Stanford University and not to Google. Google has exclusive license rights on the patent from Stanford University. The university received 1.8 million shares of Google in exchange for use of the patent; the shares were sold in 2005 for $336 million.

Description

Google describes PageRank:
Quote
PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.
PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance.
A PageRank results from a mathematical algorithm based on the graph created by all World Wide Web pages as nodes and hyperlinks, taking into consideration authority hubs like Wikipedia. The rank value indicates an importance of a particular page. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

Numerous academic papers concerning PageRank have been published since Page and Brin's original paper. In practice, the PageRank concept has proven to be vulnerable to manipulation, and extensive research has been devoted to identifying falsely inflated PageRank and ways to ignore links from documents with falsely inflated PageRank.

Other link-based ranking algorithms for Web pages include the HITS algorithm invented by Jon Kleinberg (used by Teoma and now Ask.com), the IBM CLEVER project, and the TrustRank algorithm.

The rank of pages in a website is a major factor that Google uses to rank a website. I commented in early December 2006 that the traffic to the RJO site had suddenly increased. This was due to RJO making it to the first page of the search engines. This was the same time that Google raised the page rank for the RJO home page to a page rank 3.

May be "The rank of pages in a website is a major factor that Google uses to rank a website.", but it's not the most major one. Try to search something (to google something) and you will find that the domain name is even more major one (factor). Am I right, Stella?
I will not write about SEO, but about love, food, UFO, sport, psychology, paranormal and everything else I like.

Hi Friends,

PageRank is Google’s system for ranking web pages. A page with a higher PageRank is deemed more important and is more likely to be listed above a page with a lower PageRank.

Thanks and Regards
 Richard Smith

Pagerank is a number that is used to indicate how important the website in the Internet world, especially in the web world. PageRank provides search engine ranking in effect although not the only factor used by Google to determine the level of the search results, but is most important.

Google PageRank is Google’s way of rating your website and each individual webpage. This is a rating between 0-10, with only one website ever receiving PR 10 which is of course Google.com.

And why Tanzania real estate? Why PageRank + Tanzania real estate? Is it the best SEO way in your opinion?
