10 must-eat exotic fruits

Durian

The durian is a large, spiky fruit, native to the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia, the most prestigious in Thailand - where is is known as "the king of the fruits".

It is known to those who hate it for its penetrating, powerful smell - and to those who love it for its wonderful taste. I think so, before I hated durian, the smell made me sick. But once I tried Indian durian pancake and the smell was not so strong then I thought it really nice. From then on I fell love with durian. What's more, Durian has very high nutrition value.

Durian is a nutritious food packed with minerals, proteins, and fats. Durian is an extremely fruit  that has a tonic effect for spleen and kidney.

Besides eating durian raw, some people use it to make soup, candy, pastries and ice cream. They also eat the seed, usually sliced and fried in oil. I like to eat it raw and make durian chicken soup, tasty and healthy.

African cucumber
« Reply #1 on: November 05, 2012, 12:28:35 PM »

African cucumber

Have you ever seen it? It looks like a puffy fish.

African Cucumber, also known as the horned melon, jelly melon, or melano, is a fruit that can be best described as melon with horns. It originated in the Kalahari Desert and is now present in California and New Zealand. The dark green pulp reminds one of bananas, limes, passion fruit and cucumber.  Its taste can be described as a combination of cucumber, banana and lemon. Although the fruit is edible, it is mostly used for decorating foods like smoothies and sundaes.

Rambutan

Rambutan

The first time I saw and ate this kind of fruit Ramtutan is at my friend's home.

Coming from an evergreen tree, the Rambutan fruit resembles the Lychees, have a leathery red skin and are covered with spines. Rambutan is a popular garden fruit tree and one of the most famous in Southeast Asia. The fruit is sweet and juicy, being commonly found in jams or available canned.

Rambutan fruit is  native to Malaysia, Thailand, the Phillipines and other south Asian countries. The word “rambut” in the fruit’s name means hairy. It refers to the spiky rind without which it would resemble the Lychee. The only thing which needs to be taken care of is the seed at the center which is bitter and should be discarded. Otherwise, this sweet and juicy fruit is ready to be enjoyed.

Lychee
« Reply #3 on: November 10, 2012, 02:00:21 PM »

Lychee

Lychee is native of southern China but is grown in parts of India and Taiwan as well. The rind of the fruit is leathery and is strawberry red in color with rough texture. The edible portion is soft, juicy and translucent with a sweet flavor and fragrance which is wrapped over a smooth brown seed.

Coming from an evergreen tree, the lychee or litchi are small white flesh fruits, covered in a red rind, rich in vitamin C and with a grape-like texture. The fruit has started making its appearance in markets worldwide, refrigerated or canned with its taste intact.

Lychee fruit taste is sweet and rich in nutrients, because they contain vitamin C and potassium levels are high. Substances present in the lychees can prevent and treat various diseases, such as coughs, ulcers, and hypertension.

These are really amazing fruits. I wanted to eat an African cucumber once, when I saw it in the nearby RT-Mart, but I didn't buy it. Pity...

Mangosteen
« Reply #5 on: November 15, 2012, 03:59:08 PM »

Mangosteen

The mangosteen is another evergreen tree that produces oddly shaped fruits. Mangosteen has its origin in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Southeast Asia. The fruits are purple, creamy, described as citrus with a hint of peach. It is a refreshing fruit with a subtle flavor which is a divine blend of sweet and sour. The fruit consists of a soft white edible center having many smaller segments. There is a solitary seed in each of the large segments while the smaller ones are seedless which melt in mouth secreting a delicious juice which is a perfect blend of acids and sugars. It is rich in antioxidants, some scientists even suggesting it can lower risk against certain human diseases, such as cancer. There are even legends about Queen Victoria offering a reward to the one that brings her the fruit. Well, enough reasons to call this the Queen of Fruits.

Jackfruit
« Reply #8 on: December 30, 2012, 11:46:42 AM »

Jackfruit

Jackfruit is a common fruit for Asia and Australia and considered as one of the largest tree borne fruit in the world. The juicy pulp around the seeds have a taste similar to pineapple, but milder. Apart from canned jackfruit, it is also available as sweet chips. The wood of the tree is used for making various musical instruments, while the fruit is a common ingredient for many Asian dishes. http://www.hotelclub.com/blog/10-must-try-exotic-fruits/

Enormous and prickly on the outside, jackfruit looks somewhat like durian (though jackfruit is usually even larger). Once a jackfruit is cracked open, what you will find inside are pods or "bulbs". Often referred to as the seeds, these bulbs are actually a kind of fleshy covering for the true seeds or pits, which are round and dark like chesnuts. The fleshy part (the "bulb") can be eaten as is, or cut up and cooked. When unripe (green), it is remarkably similar in texture to chicken, making jackfruit an excellent vegetarian substitute for meat. In fact, canned jackfruit (in brine) is sometimes referred to as "vegetable meat".

Jackfruit can also be purchased frozen, dried, or canned either in brine (usually unripe) or in syrup (ripe and sweet). If using fresh jackfruit, it's a good idea to oil your knife and hands first before cutting, as the fruit is very sticky.

Jackfruit contains many vitamins and minerals, and offers numerous health benefits. The fruit's isoflavones, antioxidants, and phytonutrients mean that jackfruit has cancer-fighting properties. It is also known to help cure ulcers and indigestion. Star fruit
« Reply #9 on: January 07, 2013, 02:58:34 PM »

Star fruit

Star fruit is an amazing fruit which comes from the Carambola tree. It is native to India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. When cut across, it has a stark resemblance to a star, thereby, giving it the name Star Fruit. The edible portion is thin, lustrous and has a waxy texture to it. This golden yellow fruit is sweet, crunchy and juicy with a slightly tartaric taste.

Five angled, tart to sweet tasting tropical star fruit is one of the finest sources of vitamin C which improves immunity, wound healing and offers skin protection.

Proanthocyanidin, particularly epicatechin dense starfruit, also called carambola, is a potent antioxidant that has very high free radical scavenging ability. Researchers believe that this fruit is an excellent source of inexpensive anti-oxidants. Epicatechin has anti-aging, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory abilities that can prevent metabolic syndrome, a host of cancers and diseases like arthritis, gout etc.

Kumquat
« Reply #10 on: January 07, 2013, 03:11:17 PM »

Kumquat

Kumquat fruit is native to China and have been aptly called little gems of the citrus family. The fruit is like large oil glands with an orange peel and is fleshy and thick in texture. Like most citrus fruits, they are eaten raw. They are used to make marmalade and jelly and used in the preparation of alcoholic drinks as well.

Kumquat in Chinese means “golden orange” and it resembles indeed little, very little oranges. It can be eaten with the skin and its flavour is bittersweet.

Pitaya (Dragon Fruit)
« Reply #11 on: January 07, 2013, 03:14:09 PM »

Pitaya (Dragon Fruit)

Pitaya, commonly known as Dragon Fruit, is native to Central America. It is a tropical fruit, a specimen for dry tropical climates.Considered to be a low-sugar, high-fiber, rich in antioxidants, Pitaya is the “new super fruit” of the moment. The explanation for its extensive nutritious qualities is the soil it is grown: nutrient rich volcanic mountainsides. Pitaya is famous for its ability to keep your vital digestive system finely tuned, and working to remove harmful toxins from your body.

Due to the different color of the pulp, it can be divided into three kinds: red, white, yellow. It is eaten raw with a spoon after cutting in half. May be accompanied with a little lemon juice to taste better deal. We can also make juice or wine, the big flower is also edible and pitaya can make tea.

People with diabetes don't eat much.

Passion Fruit
« Reply #12 on: January 07, 2013, 03:29:11 PM »

Passion Fruit

Passion fruit is native to South America and is grown widely in Brazil and parts of Paraguay and Argentina. The size of the fruit is comparable to that of a lemon and is round or ovoid in shape. Inside of the fruit consists of aromatic and membranous sacs filled with orange pulpy juice. The unique musky flavor of the fruit is appealing and probably is the reason for the fruit's name.

The passion fruit has a soft, juicy interior full of seeds, being commonly found in juices to boost their flavors. There are two types of passion fruit: the golden one (maracuyá), similar to a grapefruit and the dark purple passion fruit (gulupa), comparable in terms of size with a lemon. However, the latter ones have been reported as being mildly poisonous.

I think you also need to try coconuts. Now it's the season, we can find fresh coconuts everywhere. It's 3-5 rmb here. Many people drink directly with a straw. I also use the water inside and the meat to cook chicken soup. Very tasty!
