  I think this is important to be known. "Bestsellers have gained such great popularity that it has sometimes become fashionable to purchase them. Critics have pointed out that just because a book is purchased doesn't mean it will be read. The rising length of bestsellers may mean that more of them are simply becoming bookshelf decor.  There’s the Japanese word -- 'tsundoku', which perfectly describes it. The word means buying books and letting them pile up unread.  It is written in Japanese as '積ん読'.

"Tsundoku" is to pile unread books up in the owner's room or so. This is done by the owners of the books, not by the booksellers. The origin of "Tsundoku" is a Japanese slang 「積ん読」 "tsun-doku". 「積ん読」 came from 「積んでおく」 "tsunde-oku" (to pile things up and leave) and 「読書」 "dokusho" (reading books). 「積んどく」 "tsundoku" is a euphonic change of 「積んでおく」.
