Well, what about modernizing this forum, buying domain, adding chat functionality etc.? We can contribute and make forum that attracts more people. Also seo-forum looks like general forum to talk about everything, I had idea to make such one too, so I am up to engage in modernization. This forum isn't very big so it's a good moment to do such upgrade in my opinion. Take a look at: elgg, humhub, discourse, flarum, forem. In case of chat it's better to use some app than deploying it on hosting because security and privacy reasons, also there are vast more secure messengers than forum apps. My suggestions: speek, session, tox, jami. There is also retroshare that is very promising p2p social neworking app, rich in features, yet it has clunky UI and terrible lack of developers (bc lack of funding and interest unfortunately).

Most of us are in China and we're pretty limited to look at many non-Chinese websites plus we're not very rich.

About the chats: we do not risk to allow it everyone to post instant messages because we're risking a lot (in case there are some malicious users who will post something criminal which may bring us problems with the Chinese authorities or with the Google AdSense rules: no porn, no violence, no drugs, no guns, and so on and so fourth).

The hosting is currently US based as far as I know.

I don't know what to add. But the situation is, we're good people but limited a lot (limited internet access, limited incomes, pretty busy with our own problems and families...) so I suppose there will be no way to make any serious upgrades.

Just telling you all the truth because I do respect guys like you who have frank suggestions and who are full of ideas.

We can host forum on hosting that respects free speech, I know some, I can pay for it because it's cheap and run it. About using chat app: they're independent from hosting, yet from what I know there is internet censorship in China so it may be problematic for Chinese users. Are you allowed to use other messengers than wechat etc. (state-run)? In Europe you're free to communicate on whatever platform you want.

I do believe you can. But it's difficult to make a successful forum at the present time. Most of the people are "locked" to FaceBook, the rest to Reddit, Twitter, TikTok ... I don't know how you may attract visitors from scratch but if you wish and you have the money, give it shot. Most of the forums can't survive. They were the real thing before FB. Now a new forum to succeed is like 1: 10 000 I guess but if you want do it and feel free to advertise it here. We don't jealous.

I'm in safe country so I can admin it. About goo(lag): I think advertising on google adsense doesn't give good results if there is such small amount of users. Direct invites like someone invited me are probably best, and most important thing is easy and working registration, good looking UI.

ok, so open it independently of this forum? I was about migrating this forum to new software, what with userbase then? I mean, will those two forums function independently when I create modern alternative or we're going to switch to it? I don't want to create competition.

No, about Google, maybe you noticed that we are using Google ads here which help us to earn money to pay this forum's domain and hosting (and if there is some surplus, to share a few cents among ourselves). We do not advertise on Google. We only cooperate with it as his small partners (like the rest of the millions website owners who can't find another way to earn back some money for the hosting and the domain).  :)

it's the last version "SMF 2.0.19", no more modern currently. We're updating it on regular basis.

it has a domain "seo-forum-seo-luntan.com" (means science-education-omnilogy forum. "Luntan" is "forum" too but in Chinese).

adding chat functionality

use the PM (private messaging) if you feel any discomfort to speak openly in the threads (topics). It's almost instant, like a chat.

I took a look of Forem ("Forem is an open source platform for building modern, independent, and safe communities.") and elgg ("Introducing a powerful open source social networking engine
Providing you with the core components needed to build a socially aware web application") but I used to work with SMF so I don't want to switch to another system.
