Childfree | Antinatalism
« on: June 27, 2011, 12:11:05 AM »
Antinatalism is a philosophical position that asserts a negative value judgment towards birth, standing in opposition to natalism. It has been advanced by figures such as Arthur Schopenhauer, Paul Ehrlich, Heinrich Heine, Emil Cioran, Philipp Mainländer, Philip Larkin, Chris Korda, David Benatar, Matti Häyry, Thomas Ligotti and Richard Stallman. Groups that encourage antinatalism, or pursue antinatalistic policies, include the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement and the Club of Rome.

Arguments for antinatalism

Supporters of the position assert that antinatalistic policies could solve problems such as overpopulation, famine, and depletion of non-renewable resources. Some countries, such as India and China, already have policies aimed at reducing the number of children per family, in an effort to curb serious overpopulation concerns and heavy strain on national resources. Paul Ehrlich, in his book The Population Bomb, argued that rapidly increasing population would soon create a crisis, and advocated that coercive antinatalistic policies would have to be pursued on a global level in order to avert a worldwide crisis. Although the crisis he predicted did not occur in the timeframe he expected (his predictions, coming in 1968, anticipated disaster by the late eighties), he stands by the book and maintains that without future depopulation efforts the problem will worsen.

Other proponents of antinatalism appeal to the ethical side of the issue. David Benatar, for example, argues from the hedonistic premise that the infliction of harm is generally morally wrong and to be avoided. Therefore, he asserts that the birth of a new person always entails nontrivial harm to that person, creating a moral imperative not to procreate.

Criticism of antinatalism

Some parents hope that their children will provide for their parents in old age; this opinion is viewed by antinatalists as extremely selfish. Criticism of antinatalism may also come from views that hold value in bringing potential future persons into existence, but there are also views holding that there is no such obligation.

Let's right them down now:

But babies smell so nice!

You'd make a great parent!

People like you should have kids!

You'll disappoint your family!

You'll regret it!

You'll change your mind!

If your parents were cf, you wouldn't be here!

But your kid could cure cancer!

I used to be selfish too.

Then why did you get married?

It's all worth it!

You're incomplete until you have kids.

...

You'll never expirience real love!

Who will carry on the family name?

You were a kid once. You know!

It's different when it's your own.

Who will pay for social security?

If everyone thought like you, humans would go extinct!

Don't you want a little you?

Doesn't your mom want grandkids?

That's how the world works.

Who will take care of you when you're old?

Your husband will leave you!

You're still young.

Family Decals
« Reply #4 on: October 15, 2011, 12:15:03 AM »
I think that it may be sort of useful about the antinatalism/child-free fans:

Family Decals

"Two cars are parked next to each other. The car on the left is an urban SUV and has stickers on the rear window representing a family. From left to right there is an adult male, adult female, female youth, male youth, and young child. The car on the right is a sporty hatch back, it has similar stickers on the rear window, with an adult male and adult female. Instead of the youth and child stickers there is instead a large pile of money."

5 anti-childfree points and their opposition
« Reply #6 on: July 19, 2015, 02:26:12 AM »

Five anti-childfree points

and their opposition/clarification

As a philosopher, I'd like to clarify and oppose to some anti-childfree statements.

1. Kids will support you when you get old.

a) It's sad but true, that many of the kids will die, before you get old. Some of these kids may be your own kids.
b) It's also sad, but true, that many parents will die, before get old.
Reasons? A lot: car accidents, cancer, crimes, wars... We're living in an imperfect world.

Also -- there are some congenital disorders (more about the below). Some kids are born (will be born) disabled and then the parents (parent) are the ones (is the one), who should take care and support their (his/her) disabled kid/kids. A symbol: "Handicapped Accessible sign" by Ltljltlj (talk · contribs) - Own work, made to the specifications of the 2004 edition of Standard Highway Signs (sign D9-6).. 2. Kids are so cute.

Besides 'cute', 'pretty', etc. are very subjective, the fact is that some babies (and later -- kids) have different congenital disorders. Some of them makes the kid to look... very different and... probably most of the people will describe it as anything but not cute!

3. It's a big fun to chat and play with your kids.

May be for many people it is, but some of the kids are hostile, some of the kids are even with mental disorders (also known as psychiatric or psychosocial disability) and I think it's not 'big fun' to chat and play with most of them.

4. Childfree people hate kids.

Not everyone childfree person hates kids. Well, probably some hate them, some only dislike them ('hate' and 'dislike' are different), some like and even love kids. Yes, I know people who like or even love kids, but they're childfree, because they do not want kids at home; they can't afford the responsibility; they're poor and so on, and so on, and so on.

5. Kids grow up very fast.

Well, 'fast' for someone is 1 month, for another one it is 20 years. Again here we deal with a subjective and RELATIVE category. But, let's say that kids grow up 'fast'. And then, most of them, will have kids and you, when you're old and you deserve some good rest, you should start to take care and/or at least deal with GRANDKIDS. I can see often pity old people, who have to run after grandkids, who have to quarrel with grandkids, who have to suffer because of the grandkids... I feel so sad and so bad, when I see them...
:) Best wishes to you all!  8)

About the Childfree/Antinatalism in Chinese
« Reply #8 on: April 13, 2017, 03:09:59 AM »
About the CF (childfree; child-free) in Chinese:

I sent it to a Chinese young woman: "说的对!没有孩子=有自由,有空,有钱。我是个“丁克”(child-free; доброволно бездетен),我觉的这样的生活非常不错。"
