Well, if we are doing SEO then main aim is to optimize for Google mainly then there would be other search engines like Yahoo and MSN. What we need to understand is algorithms of Google, it is also said that no one understand algorithm of Google but we need to follow at least white hat technique which is recommended by Google itself.

MaryD, I do agree that we need to follow at least white hat technique which is recommended by Google.com itself, but there are also other very important search engines (they have local importance). One of the most important local search engine is

Baidu

. Baidu.com is the most famous Chinese search engine. And as far as China's power (including the Internet Power) is not only local, as a result Baidu.com is becoming a very important search engine worldwide.
According to Alexa Internet (Alexa.com) it's not only ranked N'1 in China, but also N'10 in South Korea, N'153 in Japan and N' 229 in USA and N' 7 in the world ( http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/baidu.com# )
That's why I think that ranking / SEO for Baidu is also so important as the ranking / SEO in Google.
And now, let me teach you some SEO about the other local Search engine phenomena. In Czech N'1 is not Google, but Seznam.cz. Seznam.cz is N'1 in Czech and N'36 in Slovakia. ( http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/seznam.cz# ) And in Korea, N'1 is Naver.com ( http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/naver.com# ).
