The United States, knocked from its top spot by China in 2010 and Japan in 2011, once again has the world’s fastest supercomputer, says a biannual scorecard Monday.
Top speed went to the Department of Energy’s IBM BlueGene/Q system, nicknamed Sequoia, at its Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., according to the Top500 list released Monday at the 2012 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany.
The supercomputer, developed to safeguard the nation’s stockpile of nuclear weapons, clocked in at 16.32 sustained petaflops or quadtrillion floating point operations per second. It’s also one of the most energy-efficient systems to make the list.
These supercomputers help U.S. scientists model climate change and develop future energy sources. Two others made the top 10: third-ranking Mira at Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., and sixth-ranking Jaguar at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Japan had the world’s second-fastest supercomputer. Germany and China each had two on the top 10 list. Italy and France each had one.
