 Links are links. Only one type, I think. Because the links are just links.

According to me blog commenting, forum postings, article submission, socialbookmarking & press release sites are the best for link building.

There are lot of way to build links and some our friends already included those.
For a brand new website if you want to do the off page optimization then you should focus on the following...

1. Mainly use unique content for your website
2. Focus on brand name (like promote your company name for which you are doing promotion work)
3. Don't create a bulk submission or Don't create any unnatural links
4. Give preference to Forum Posting & Yahoo Answering
5. Submit your website into High PR directory and Bookmarking site
6. Include SMO part into your promotion work
