I generally go for the keywords which have moderate global searches and average competition.
Beside this, I also look for the all the three matches: Broad , Exact and Phrase match before finalization.

"moderate global searches"

"moderate global searches"? Why? Isn't it better to choose as much as possible global searches? For example 5 000 000 global searches are better than 50 000 global searches?
I will be waiting for your answer!

You can also use google webmaster tool to do keyword research. I have done some keyword research for my website with the help of google webmaster tool and I'm very happy with its outcome.

A keyword is essentially any word or phrase you use when searching with a search engine. The search engine does its best to match your words with the words on websites. The mathematics involved are complicated, but the first link you see in the search results should be the best match for your keyword, followed by the second best, and so on and so forth.
