Angkor Wat,Cambodia
Built in the 12th century,
Angkor Wat is the most visited attraction of
Cambodia. Situated in
Angkor, it has been an important pilgrimage center.
Angkor Wat was made for King Suryavarman II as his state temple and was then dedicated to Lord Vishnu. However, it was slowly turned into a Buddhist Temple. Angkor Wat is also a wonderful illustration of classic Khmer Architecture. Sandstone is the material used for all the major constructions in the temple. Outer wall and few hidden structures are made of laterite. You will find intricate carvings on the walls depicting scenes from Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. You will be amazed to know that almost every inch of the temple from rooftop to the last stair has images carved on them. This indirectly tells you that keep ample time in your hand when visiting Angkor Wat if you wish to see it all. The Angkor Wat Temple is a part of the World Heritage Site of Angkor as a whole.
