Believe it or not, if you're a good student in school you can also learn many topics for conversation from your lessons. For example, from this English lesson:
Have a conversation about...the qualities you look for in a friend.
some responsibilities you have at the moment.
how many friends you have.
your favourite sport to play.
what love means to you.
the people you live with.
your happiest memory.
what would happen if you won the lottery.
your favourite ice-cream flavour.
your unhappiest memory. (
I don't recommend that unless the person you're with would like to share about it by herself/himself.)
something you are scared of.
which three wishes you would choose.
someone special in your life.
one thing you love about yourself.
who you would take with you on a spaceship to the moon.
who you would like to hug right now.
one thing you would change about your life.
something that is worrying you.
something you wish you had not done.
what you are good at.
your favourite holiday destination.
which superpower you would choose.
what you want to be when you are older.
your favourite famous person.
where you would like to live, if you could live anywhere in the world.
who you see as your role model.
something you would like to learn to do.
a time a friend let you down.
the best things about your family.
something you have taught someone else to do.
which animal you would like to be.
what your bedroom looks like.
the best present you ever gave to someone.
your earliest memory.
the best present you have ever received.
your siblings, or being an only child.
what you do in the summer holidays.
your favourite TV show.
a time you felt sad.
Some of these are too childish for many of the adults and others are not very good for a person who you meet for the first time. Still, mostly, they're useful.
