China's State Council announced Thursday the establishment of the City of Sansha, a prefectural-level city.

From now on, the Xisha, Nansha, Zhongsha islands and their adjacent islets and waters will be under the administrative jurisdiction of Sansha City, according to a statement published on the website of the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Thursday.

Accordingly, the liaison offices in Hainan province which used to administer the area will be annulled.

The new Sansha City is headquartered in Yongxing Island, the main island of the Xisha islands in the South China Sea.
