 It's so true. As webmasters we should you use metatags (or meta elements). Well, of course, they aren't the "all that you need" to get ranked high into the search engines' SERP, in many cases. There are so many other factors (to get to the top of the SERPs). Examples? Sure: the age of the website and the domain, how the site is constructed, how interesting and unique is its content, the number and the quality of the links to your website/webpages and more. Metatags are helpful. Search engines (like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) show metatags in their SERPs. So, if you have good, adequate metatags, then you'll have a visible influence on your presentation. And by this you'll be able to get a better the click-behavior of your potential visitors or/and customers.

Meta elements are tags used in HTML or XHTML documents to provide structured metadata about a Web page. They are part of a web page's head section. Multiple Meta elements with different attributes can be used on the same page. Meta elements can be used to specify page description, keywords and any other metadata not provided through the other head elements and attributes.

The meta element has two uses: either to emulate the use of an HTTP response header field, or to embed additional metadata within the HTML document.

With HTML up to and including HTML 4.01 and XHTML, there were four valid attributes: content, http-equiv, name and scheme. Under HTML 5 there are now five valid attributes, charset having been added. http-equiv is used to emulate an HTTP header, and name to embed metadata. The value of the statement, in either case, is contained in the content attribute, which is the only required attribute unless charset is given. charset is used to indicate the character set of the document, and is available in HTML5.

Such elements must be placed as tags in the head section of an HTML or XHTML document.

  Let's face it -- there are different opinions on the metatags. Some guys think that the meta stuff don't do anything to the websites' ranking. OKAY, but I disagree. I think that they miss out on something important and it is that not only does the SEs shows your description tag, but by adding a good and relevant text, more people would like to click on the link from the SERPs, and that provides your website/websites with a better CTR. This CTR (which means "click through rate") has influence on the ranking. I'm pretty sure about it and this is my opinion. Good topic!
