It was April 2012 I think I was hit first by Penguin Update. it was like world changed. Everything got disappeared from  search results.
It took us couple of years again to come on track. But now rules are good and new people(websites) too get change to get on google results.
. We started from scratch changed all content ( as per panda Update) and analyzed all backlinks and removed or disowned bad links.

As far my knowledge goes No follow links don't impact direct search rankings or offer any link juice. But No-follow links helps in getting direct traffic to website.
Links from famous social media sites like facebook , twitter are all no follow links but they help in generating  direct traffic.
So as per my opinion nofollow links do help in generating traffic to website and are as essential as dofollow links. .

What is Off page Optimization ?
What are back links ?.

It will surely help to select right people . Internet is full of Frauds so try to gain some knowledge before selection. Hope it helps

Sure good PR sites help getting in direct traffic but Press release website like  onlineprnews.com and newswire.com also gives lot of link juice and helps in google rankings too.

The best way I opted to generate backlinks is to check my highly ranked competitors backlinks and try getting links from same places
I uses tool seoprofiler.com for checking the quality of links. it really helped me to get more and more quality links.

I believe best way to bring down competitor website to increase your own website ranks. I don't think there's any tool or direct way to impact 3rd party website ranking. Best you can do give some bad backlinks  that will impact his /her website negatively . Even that he can check and disown  using google webmaster tool. So best way suggested is  to focus on your own website and try improving your own search rankings.
