Yes you are right, in one way, it is analyzing your websites as well as your competitors also, technology is very advanced today so we need to take help of these tools also.

Normally, the website traffic analysis can be programmed to start gathering data by putting a tiny javascript code in the web site pages and every time a visitor looks at a page and reads it, the javascript code then begins gathering information about the visitor and then immediately transmits the gathered information to the service to be stored on the database for future reference.

Such tools are great for collecting historical data,but I have found that many have their flaws. I prefer real time results by manually checking. Not all tools are created equal.
