Title: Vehicles
Post by: SEO on January 23, 2011, 01:54:38 AM
The cheapest car ever is "Made in India". It costs around $ 3000. Nice, isn't it? :)
Title: 真好!

是真好的! :D I meant - "It's really good!"  :) Especially for the people who need car. I don't need a car. I prefer travel by bus, by train, by bike, by plane. "That's me, that's me, that's me, that's real me!"  :) (It's a song that I heard from CCTV - The Chinese Central Television).

Me too. I prefer something that helps me to sport like bicycle. If I am in hurry - bus is alright.

Most of the time I take bus to go for long distance. So I don't want to buy a car.

I wished I could say I don't drive because of the expense necessary to do one's shopping and bill paying. Since I live in the US we have a small problem not seen in many of the European developed countries. That is to say outside of large Metro areas, there is little in the form of public mass transportation to get you there and back within the same day.

Worse, everything is spread out. To pay your bills usually requires traveling further than a bicycle trip. For instance to do groceries requires me a 16 mile trip one way. That's 7 kms there and another back hauling your groceries. No train runs there by the hour, no taxis are reasonably priced since they would have to come from out of town to pick you up and would charge a waiting price while you shopped. No bus runs there on more than a daily basis. To pay utilities bills, is a trip down town to the post office, another across town for another utility.

There's no paying it all at the post office or at some central location. Paying the electricity is an out of state deal and in Texas you can drive 12 hours at 75 mph (121 kph) and never leave the state. Everything is just far apart.  If I need to go to the big city to buy something not found in a small town, that's 70 miles there and back, just from city limits to city limits.

Getting around without a vehicle is just not workable.

Title: Flying cars are just 2 years away
Post by: MSL on February 25, 2016, 05:33:25 AM

Flying cars

We watched a lot of films (sci-fi), where the flying cars are something very ordinary. Many people have no doubt that it's just a question of time, before these vehicles (the flying cars) will be something available for the mankind. Well, there is probably a real hope already: the US company Terrafugia claims its TF-X will be ready to take to the skies by 2018, i.e. just in 2 years. Read about it, if you wish: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3454461/Flying-cars-just-TWO-years-away-Terrafugia-claims-TF-X-ready-skies-2018.html#ixzz417gVzZBD

Yes and no. I refuse to use such services and here's why. When you sign up for autobilling from your bank account, you give them access to charge your account directly. But should you want to end that, banks aren't so quick to terminate this permission. For one they want to make sure they don't get stuck with hunting you down for autopay and then terminating the account. So it's not going to be as easy as signing up. For many of them if you can't quote and refer to the actual law that says you can terminate this permission, they are reluctant to do so.

For another, things go wrong with billing. When they do, you can be overcharged and then not even know it for a month till you get your statement. When you do find out, it's a hassle to get your money back. The first thing they will want to do is not put the money back but rather to say, 'You've got credit with us' and charge that against future payments instead.

When I first got out on my own, I had a mistake with my electric billing, in my very first small apartment. I had like 3 light bulbs, a refrigerator, a radio, a hot water heater, and a very small guitar amp. My bill for the month was $1000. There is no way I could have used that much power. The biller made a mistake with everyone on the street and they were charged business's power usage. It took getting off from work and traveling to the power company, only to find out all my neighbors were in line for the same thing. Took 1/2 a day to get it straight and the loss of a day's pay by not being at work. That was decades ago and the same power bill today would have been multiples of that. Could your bank account stand that and then not get the money back after it was taken out?

Yes. I also avoid online payments and it's very good that here the system is like this: every month a paper bill is brought to the door (sticked on the door) and all we have to do is to prepare some cash and to visit the office downstairs, and to pay.
That's a really expensive car. :) Well, let me add also something ontopic -- a company with interesting name -- Red Star Auto: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Star_Auto

I found your car link rather interesting. Here in the state is a company who was making DeLorean car parts.

Recently it purchased the licensing to make again the DeLorean and does so by hand. I read an article about this some days ago. Not exactly cheap as far as cars go because of limited production. I found the article most interesting because it is made in the state I live in.

Here is the wiki on the DeLorean (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeLorean_Motor_Company)

You wait 3 years and buying one of these Telsas used only costs around ⅓rd the cost if you just must have one. Folks dump them when it comes time to replace the battery pack.

Title: Re: Vehicles
Post by: mojo on April 03, 2016, 07:12:12 PM
It's one of the major costs of an electric car. Expensive is one way of describing it.

Another issue here is traveling. Most of your usage of a vehicle is under 30 miles a day for work. Once in a while you need to take a trip and this is where the problem comes in for a car that doesn't charge itself, such as hybrids do. The infrastructure to support electric charging stations isn't wide spread yet. So you are limited to within 300 miles of the recharge stations with no way to return on it's own power. Less than 150 miles round trip to and from a charge station.

https://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger

My understanding is at present there is no standard configuration for the plug in. Telsa has offered it's design, free of charge, for any company that might want to adopt it for their own vehicle manufacturing. But standardization is not yet locked in. So you may arrive at a recharge station only to find it won't work for your car if you are driving another make vehicle, such as Ford or Toyota.

Cost of a Leaf Battery here (http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1092983_nissan-leaf-battery-cost-5500-for-replacement-with-heat-resistant-chemistry). Leaf is not as an expensive a car as the Telsa makes. But it should get you in the ball park of the costs.

I understand now. You're explaining the matters very well!

I remember reading about the compressed air car. Was at one time being considered to be made in the US. Only there were issues with passing the National Safety Standards. So instead I believe I read India was to make them.

Evidently the Telsa Model 3 is doing better than expected in preorders. So much so that analysis are predicting that Telsa will need a bigger factory just to meet the existing preorders already received in a reasonable time limit.

According to CEO Elon Musk on Twitter (https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/716341849409998849) preorders are doing much better than expected with a possible 300,000 vehicles preordered by the end of the year as an estimate.
