Title: What is computer
Post by: MSL on June 26, 2012, 01:31:59 PM

What is computer

For many of us it's a funny question, but for the newbies in internet it's a serious question (probably). It may be a serious question for all the people, who are dealing with science at school, at the university, at the laboratories, etc. That is why I think the question "what is "computer"?" is a good, useful, reasonable and interesting question.
In fact even those of us, who are using the computers (desktops, laptops, tablets, netbooks, etc.), not every time (and not everyone) is able to explain what is computer. Yes, you may use it, you may point to it, you may recognize it ("this is a TV, not a computer"; "this is the computer and that is the electric fan", "this is my computer and that is my sister's computer", etc.), but it not necessary means that you're able to give a proper definition or/and to be able to know exactly the essence of the computer (it's not "just a box with a screen", is it? ;D).
 There are some definitions:
 1. What is computer, according to Wikipedia:
"A computer is a general purpose device which can be programmed to carry out a finite set of arithmetic or logical operations. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License
 2. What is computer, according to Webopedia:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/computer.html
 3. More about what is computer on Google: http://www.google.com.hk/search?q=what+is+computer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Computers are a fairly new technology in our society. At least as we know them today. We've had mechanical aids to help us with counting and math at least back to 2400 BC with the Abacus. But an abacus is not really a computer is it?

One of the jokes I always enjoy springing on folks is the Amish Laptop (https://www.esato.com/archive/t.php/t-117104,1.html).

The line sort of gets faded as to what is a computer and when the first computer was made. After all computers are giant calculating devices. In 1833 Charles Babbage invented what he called the Analytical Engine. Punch cards were used to input data and the machine spit out data on punch cards.

Now a days we don't have to worry about punch cards. The first vacuum tube computer which took a large space to house, was a mechanical/vacuum combination known as the Z2. The Z3 which was created in 1941, was the very first electromechanical programmable computer.

The US built the ENIAC computer for calculating ballistics. They finished building it in 2 years and was completed in 1943. The first lady in the image on the left holds an ENIAC computer board.

Today general calculations and computers have come a long ways. Your car is a good example of a computer that no longer looks like a computer. Everything from firing control on the ignition system to controlling the feel of the ride are incorporated in them.

Cell phones today have more power and calculating ability than the first space capsule the astronauts used.

You find them in everything from home thermostats to traffic control and many times you aren't even aware they are there and on the job.

Some Bulgarians are very proud of the American John Atanasoff, because he's a half Bulgarian.
Quote
Atanasoff's father, Ivan Atanasoff was born in 1876 in the village of Boyadzhik, close to Yambol, Bulgaria. While Ivan was still an infant, Ivan's own father was killed by Ottoman soldiers after the Bulgarian April Uprising.[5] In 1889, Ivan Atanasov immigrated to the United States with his uncle. Atanasoff's mother, Iva Lucena Purdy, was a teacher of mathematics.

John Atanasoff invented the first electronic digital computer in the 1930s at Iowa State College.
And about the Amish people -- it's a good example what's the result, if someone is too into a religion. That Amish laptop is really a good example for a possible development, without electricity. :)
