Leshan Grand Buddha, Sichuan, China

Located to the east of Leshan city in the southern part of Sichuan province, at the confluence of the Min, Qingyi, and Dadu Rivers, the Leshan Giant Buddha is widely known throughout China and around the world. The Giant Buddha idol took more than 90 years of hard work to accomplish and is a bright star on the UNESCO World Heritage site list.

Facing the river, the Buddha sits with beautifully captured solemn stillness and in a symmetrical posture, overlooking the waters. Overall, the sculpture is 71 meters (232 feet) high and has fingers measuring three meters (9.8 feet) long! The eight meter (26 feet) long instep on the bottom of each foot is big enough for 100 people to sit on, and the 28 meter (92 feet) wide shoulder span would be large enough for a full basketball court!

Ganvie is a lake village in the nation of Benin, lying in Lake Nokoué, near Cotonou. Established in the 16th or 17th centuries to save people from slavery, Ganvie is a neighborhood of 3,000 buildings on stilts, with a population of 20-30,000.The people in this unique fishing village live exclusively from fishing (along with a little tourism), use pirogues (canoes) and have a system of underwater plantings that form fences to trap and breed fish.

Mexcaltitan, Mexico

  The tiny Venice of Mexico--Mexcaltitan, Nayarit. The tiny man-made island village of Mexcaltitan, in the mangrove wetlands of Riviera Nayarit is reputed to the birthplace of Mexico, the legendary ancient Aztlan. It's only 1300 feet in diameter and home to more than 800 people. Tourism is increasing, but the island is not swamped with visitors, and the few that visit are normally from other parts of Mexico rather than international tourists.
This small island relys economically mostly on fishing for shrimps. During the dry season it looks like any other island, but in the rainy season the streets flood, forcing locals to get around via canoe.

Dunnottar Castle, Scotland

 Dunnottar Castle has one of the most spectacular locations of any castle. A collection of buildings from various periods crown the top of a promontory that rises steeply from the surrounding sea and land.

Dunnottar was in use many centuries before any of the remaining buildings were erected. It was the site of one of Scotland's first churches and remained an important Christian site for many years before being developed into a fortress.

Despite its obvious defensive potential Dunnottar was successfully captured many times. Nothing remains of the fortress King Donald II died defending during a Viking invasion in the late 9th century, or that English forces twice captured only to be retaken by the Scots, on the first occasion led by William Wallace and on the second by Sir Andrew Moray. These early wooden castles were routinely burnt down during or after a siege.

The most prominent building still standing is the L-shaped tower-house built towards the end of the 14th century by William Keith, Earl Marischal of Scotland.
